Email can take up a lot of time during your day. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you are in sales or marketing. The more emails you send, the more deals you close…typically. But we’ve all had those days where you do nothing but send out dozens upon dozens of emails and yet it still feels like nothing got done.

1. ContactMonkey
ContactMonkey is an extremely useful extension you can use for Gmail that enables you to keep track of recipients opening your emails. Sure, it’s definitely good to see if someone opened an email you sent them, but ContactMonkey takes it one step further. It tracks how many times an email has been opened, as well as hyperlinks clicked, and even the number of times an attachment has been opened.
It’s pretty useful, especially when it comes to seeing how many times a prospect has opened an email to view something like a proposal. Plus it integrates with salesforce and it reports to you in real time. Not much more you could ask for. Pricing is pretty reasonable but they do have a free feature that will get the job done for many Gmail users.
2. Rapportive
The more info you have on a prospect, the better off you are, and that’s where Rapportive comes into play. This extension can help you gather all the important details about an email contact without you having to go out and put in hours and hours of research. This handy little app goes out and finds info from the recipient’s LinkedIn profile. This is particularly helpful with any LinkedIn marketing you may have going on, and it gives you all the details right inside of your inbox.
3. Toutapp
If you have ever used the Canned Responses plugin in Gmail, you know how beneficial it is to have pre-drafted email templates for common situations. Toutapp takes this concept and runs with it. It includes not only the use of email templates, but also tracking analytics, an extremely useful calendar app, and even task management customization so you know when to follow up with prospects.
4. WiseStamp
WiseStamp helps create customized email signatures within Gmail. This is a great app for sales teams to create a uniformly branded email signature. Not only does WiseStamp help your emails stand out among the crowd, but it also gives a great way to promote key content in your signature as well.
5. BatchedInBox
Sometimes managing your email can seem like a fulltime job. It can get to the point where your other work suffers because you’re constantly checking your inbox to see if you’ve had a new email come in. Admit it, we’ve all been there.
BatchedInbox solves this problem by allowing you to filter your email to come in at certain times during the day. Don’t want to get distracted while working on other projects? Simply set-up the BatchedInbox app to forward your emails to you at specific times so that you can better manage the time spent checking your inbox.
6. Streak
If you’re looking to completely transform Gmail into a CRM system then Streak might be the app for you. Streak helps you fully optimize your inbox allowing you to see what you need to see, when you need to see it. Whether it’s scheduling emails, setting up reminders for responses, or creating a mail merge to message tons of contacts at once, Streak has got you covered in all departs of email management.

Excellent article, Ben! Useful list. Do check out grexit.com, really good for sharing emails (by just adding labels – no need to forward), and for delegating emails to your team-mates. It also lets you write notes on emails. Thanks, Niraj
Niraj, we’ll have to check grexit out! I’d be interested in an extension that helps you manage and link tasks to specific emails.
